Will Smith and his Tao

May 29, 2008

Will Smith Tao of BergeracWill Smith is obsessed with Bergerac, the classic TV show set in Jersey.

Having one guiding force – an audio book of John Nettles reading the ancient Chinese text of the Tao – he uses the recordings to make sense of his life.

First heard on BBC Radio 4, over four episodes Will navigates the minefields of justice, individuality, love and machismo.

The Tao tells Will to be himself. So why did going to the sixth form ball dressed as Gandalf make him uncool? And is it wrong to dump a woman because she doesn’t alphabetise her CDs?

Very funny mixture of stand-up and studio guests with some great comedians involved including Matt Holness (Garth Marenghi), Adam Buxton and Dan Tetsell.

At the end of each episode Will Smith gets the audience to shout out random names of films, and then links each film to an episode of Bergerac in six moves or less – it has to be heard to be believed.
A comic tour de force.

Carry On, Jeeves! Image AudiobookWith the world giving considerable evidence of going to hell in a basket
and prophets of doom on every hand assuring us that there is No Place to Hide, it is very comforting to be able to crawl into a Wodehouse novel and pull it in after you.”

“I am one of those who get a thorough laughing jag on Wodehouse, and the more utterly absurd he is the better, I say.”

Image Darwin Awards IV: Intelligent Design Audio Book“…there are some things that can beat smartness and foresight. Awkwardness and stupidity can. The best swordsman in the world doesn’t need to fear the second best swordsman in the world; no, the person for him to be afraid of is some ignorant antagonist who has never had a sword in his hand before; he doesn’t do the thing he ought to do, and so the expert isn’t prepared for him.”Mark Twain

Another book in the Darwin Awards series honoring those who continue to improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it in a sublimely idiotic fashion!

The stupidity of others is always amusing, and the Darwin Awards celebrate excellence in stupidity. This latest compilation of true tales of idiocy is spectacular.

It avoids being “more of the same” by virtue of the astounding variety of ways people find to remove themselves from the gene pool. Overall, well worth the money.

Made into a motion picture in 2006, starring Winona Ryder and Joseph Fiennes!

From the sheriff who unintentionally shot himself twice, to the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw; from a farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag, to the man crushed by the branch he’d just severed; The Darwin Awards III proves again that when it comes to stupidity, we are the most advanced species on the planet.
