Promise me

Promise Me Harlan Coben“Harlan Coben is the modern master of the hook-and-twist - luring you in on the first page, only to shock you on the last.”

Dan Brown, author of The Da Vinci Code

It has been six years since entertainment agent Myron Bolitar last played superhero. In six years he hasn’t thrown a punch. He hasn’t held, much less fired, a gun. He hasn’t called his friend Win, still the scariest man he knows, to back him up or get him out of trouble.

All that is about to change . . . because of a promise.

The school year is almost over. Anxious families await word of college acceptances. In these last pressure-cooker months of high school, some kids will make the all-too-common and all-too-dangerous mistake of drinking and driving.

But Myron is determined to help keep his friends’ children safe, so he makes two neighborhood girls promise him: If they are ever in a bind but are afraid to call their parents, they must call him. Several nights later, the call comes at 2:00 am, and true to his word, Myron picks up one of the girls in midtown Manhattan and drives her to a quiet dead-end road in New Jersey where she says her friend lives.

The next day, the girl’s parents discover that their daughter is missing. And that Myron was the last person to see her. Desperate to fulfill a well-intentioned promise turned nightmarishly wrong, Myron races to find her before she’s gone forever.

But his past will not be buried so easily - for trouble has always stalked him, and his loved ones often suffer. Now Myron must decide once and for all who he is and what he will stand up for if he is to have any hope of saving a young girl’s life.

One thing you should know before you buy this audiobook:

“Harlan Coben is a master storyteller and an enthusiastic reader. However, his convoluted plot with its fascinating multilayered characters would have benefited from the subtlety and finesse of a professional voice actor.”

Will Smith and his Tao

May 29, 2008

Will Smith Tao of BergeracWill Smith is obsessed with Bergerac, the classic TV show set in Jersey.

Having one guiding force - an audio book of John Nettles reading the ancient Chinese text of the Tao - he uses the recordings to make sense of his life.

First heard on BBC Radio 4, over four episodes Will navigates the minefields of justice, individuality, love and machismo.

The Tao tells Will to be himself. So why did going to the sixth form ball dressed as Gandalf make him uncool? And is it wrong to dump a woman because she doesn’t alphabetise her CDs?

Very funny mixture of stand-up and studio guests with some great comedians involved including Matt Holness (Garth Marenghi), Adam Buxton and Dan Tetsell.

At the end of each episode Will Smith gets the audience to shout out random names of films, and then links each film to an episode of Bergerac in six moves or less - it has to be heard to be believed.
A comic tour de force.

Evelyn Waugh, author

Jeeves, the servant supreme, is as shrewd as ever, as wise as ever, as funny as ever.

Fast Degree Online - Overcome The Challenges Of Furthering Your Education

May 27, 2008

Completing one’s education has never been more desirable than it is nowadays. Statistics show that employees who are 24-35 in age and who have their bachelor degrees make around $14,000 more each year than their peers who have nothing more than high school diplomas. The gap (up to $23.000 per year) is even larger for workers 45-54. Lately, there have been huge technological advances, and computer programs are taking the place of people for doing a variety of chores. That leaves fewer job openings for laborers without specific training. It is becoming more and more necessary to have a vocation and a useful skill set.
